You Did It: A Call to Choose Wisdom Before It’s Too Late

Words Of The Wise Pt 3

Life is full of decisions. Some are small and seemingly insignificant, while others shape the entire trajectory of our lives. Proverbs 1:20-33 speaks directly to the weight of our choices, urging us to embrace wisdom while it is still available. The message is simple yet profound: If distress comes as a result of willful ignorance, we have no one to blame but ourselves. As the old saying goes, “You did it!” We all have to live with the consequences of our choices.

Wisdom Is Calling—Will You Listen?

In Proverbs 1:20-23, wisdom is personified as a street preacher, calling out in public places, raising her voice above the noise of everyday life. She is accessible, available, and approachable.

Wisdom doesn’t hide in secret societies or remote caves. It is right there, plain as day, for anyone willing to listen. But the reality is, many ignore her call. Why? Because they love their sin. The simple, the scoffers, and the foolish delight in their ignorance, refusing to entertain the life-giving counsel of the Lord.

Yet, wisdom’s message is not one of condemnation but of grace. She pleads for repentance—a change of mind and direction. This act of humility and faith leads to a life enriched by God’s Spirit and His wisdom. Just as a “Wrong Way” sign on the road is not there to shame but to redirect, wisdom’s call is an opportunity for a fresh start.

Life Application

By nature, we are all going the wrong way, headed for destruction because of sin. But God, in His grace, offers us an alternate route through Jesus Christ. Aren’t you thankful for a God who warns us and offers a way out rather than letting us plunge into danger?

The Consequences of Ignoring Wisdom

Proverbs 1:24-31 gives a sobering picture of what happens when we reject wisdom. Despite wisdom’s repeated calls, many refuse to listen. They ignore her outstretched hand, her counsel, and her warnings. Their rejection has dire consequences: calamity, terror, and distress.

Here’s the painful truth—there will come a time when it’s too late to turn back. Like a storm that strikes suddenly, the consequences of ignoring wisdom cannot be undone. When calamity hits, the foolish cry out for help, but wisdom laughs. It’s not cruelty; it’s the reality of missed opportunities.

A Real-World Example

Think of insurance. You pay for it when you don’t need it, so you’re covered when you do. Wisdom works the same way. Accepting wisdom now ensures security later. Ignoring it means facing the full weight of your choices unprepared.

Living It Out

Don’t wait until it’s too late to accept Christ. The decisions you make in this life will determine how you spend the next. What will you do with Jesus today?

The Outcomes of Your Choice

In Proverbs 1:32-33, the contrast between rejecting and accepting wisdom is clear. Those who reject wisdom fall into apostasy, trading truth for falsehood and growing complacent in their sin. This willful ignorance leads to death and destruction.

On the other hand, those who accept wisdom live securely and at ease, free from the dread of ultimate destruction. Wisdom offers peace and safety to those who embrace her.

A Story to Consider

Jesus paints a similar picture in Matthew 7:24-27. The wise man builds his house on the rock, secure against life’s storms. The foolish man builds on the sand, and when the storm comes, his house collapses. The foundation of your life matters.

Your Next Step

How you respond to Jesus makes all the difference. You can love your sin and procrastinate, but one day you will face the consequences of your choices.

Conclusion: The Choice is Yours

The message of Proverbs 1 is clear: God’s wisdom is available to all who will listen. He offers us the gospel message and the chance to turn from our sin and follow Him. If we choose to ignore His call and find ourselves in distress—either in this life or in eternity—we can’t blame God. The choice is ours.

So, what will you do with this opportunity? Will you heed wisdom’s call, or will you wait until it’s too late? The foundation of your life is being built right now—choose wisely.
