A Blog From Sunday’s Sermon on Proverbs 30:18–33
Life was never meant to be lived in confusion or chaos. God, in His wisdom, established an order for all things: family, morality, work, and even the rhythms of nature. When we live in harmony with His design, we experience peace and stability. But when we reject it, we invite disorder and destruction. Proverbs 30:18–33 gives us a clear picture of both paths: the blessing of following God’s order and the danger of defying it.
I. Follow God’s Order for Life (Proverbs 30:18–23)
Scripture points to four things too wonderful to understand: an eagle soaring in the sky, a snake moving across a rock, a ship gliding through the sea, and a man with a young woman. These images describe the mystery and beauty of God’s created order. Each example functions effortlessly within the pattern God designed.
However, verse 20 introduces a sharp contrast: the adulteress who sins yet claims innocence. This represents those who reject God’s order and create their own. She sins without remorse and wipes her mouth as if nothing is wrong, a picture of today’s world that has rewritten God’s standards for gender, morality, and family.
The consequences of rejecting God’s order are severe. Verses 21–23 describe four situations that make the earth “quake”: a servant becoming king illegitimately, a fool who prospers, an unloved wife, and a maidservant who replaces her mistress. Each scenario upends God’s intended structure, resulting in instability and tension. When we ignore God’s design, the world shakes under the weight of our rebellion.
II. Follow God’s Ovation for Life (Proverbs 30:24–33)
The passage then shifts from rebellion to wisdom. We meet four small but wise creatures: the ant, the hyrax, the locust, and the lizard. Though weak by nature, they thrive because they live according to God’s wisdom:
- The ant works diligently and prepares for the future.
- The hyrax builds security among the rocks.
- The locust operates in unity without a king.
- The lizard quietly gains access to royal palaces.
Each one succeeds not by strength but by wisdom, an example of how godly wisdom can elevate even the smallest life.
Then, Scripture describes four proud creatures: the lion, the rooster, the goat, and the king with his army. They strut with confidence, but their strength is temporary. When power fades, pride crumbles. The message is clear: let wisdom speak for you, not pride. Those who promote themselves bring strife and downfall; those who live humbly by God’s wisdom stand secure.
Application: God’s Design Still Stands
God’s Word gives us the blueprint for every part of life: family, intimacy, gender, morality, work ethic, finances, and church life. The world rejects this divine order, wipes its mouth, and says, “There’s nothing wrong.” But the results are all around us: instability, confusion, and division.
When we live by God’s Word, we are like those wise creatures, small in the world’s eyes but strong in God’s wisdom. When we reject His design, we become like the proud animals, impressive for a moment but destined to fall.
Conclusion: Whose Ovation Are You Living For?
In the end, the only ovation worth having is God’s ovation.
Living for man’s applause will lead to pride, compromise, and ruin. Living for God’s approval leads to life, peace, and eternal joy.
And God’s greatest order of all is this:
“Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone.”
You can’t do life your way and expect God’s blessing. But when you surrender to His order, follow His wisdom, and trust in His Son, you’ll hear the words we all long to hear:
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
