The Good Shepherd: Finding Security in Jesus

The Good Shepherd

Psalm 23

Life is full of uncertainties, but one thing remains constant—Jesus, our Good Shepherd. In John 10:11, Jesus declares, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” Just as a shepherd cares for and protects his flock, so does Jesus care for us, leading us, providing for us, and sustaining us through every season of life.

Jesus is Our Source

Psalm 23 beautifully illustrates how Jesus, as our Shepherd, meets every need of His sheep. “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1) This means that in Him, we lack nothing—He provides peace, provision, and restoration.

  • His Peace: A sheep will only lie down when it feels completely safe, free from fear, hunger, and conflict. Likewise, Jesus gives us peace beyond understanding, allowing us to rest in His care.
  • His Provision: In the dry climate of Palestine, water is scarce, yet a good shepherd ensures his flock has access to still, life-sustaining water. Jesus is our living water, quenching our deepest spiritual thirst.
  • His Pastoral Care: When a sheep is “cast” (stuck on its back), the shepherd lovingly restores it. When we are spiritually lost or struggling, Jesus comes to our aid, lifting us up and setting us back on the right path.
  • His Piloting: Left alone, sheep will destroy their own pasture. The shepherd must lead them to fresh grazing lands. Jesus leads us in paths of righteousness, guiding us for our good and His glory.

Jesus is Our Sustainer

Walking with Jesus does not mean a life without challenges. Psalm 23:4 acknowledges that we will walk through “the valley of the shadow of death.” However, we do not walk alone.

  • His Purpose: Sometimes, we wonder why we face difficulties. The truth is, just as a shepherd leads his sheep through dark valleys to reach higher pastures, Jesus leads us through hardships to help us grow spiritually. These valleys are necessary for our faith to strengthen and deepen.
  • His Presence: “You are with me.” Jesus never sends us into trials alone; He walks beside us, guiding us through the darkness.
  • His Protection: “Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” The rod defends against predators, and the staff gently directs the sheep. We can rest in knowing that Jesus protects and corrects us in love.
  • His Preparation: Before leading his flock to new pastures, a shepherd goes ahead to clear dangers. Jesus has already gone before us, preparing the way and ensuring our safety.
  • His Prevention: Shepherds anoint their sheep with oil to keep pests away. Similarly, God’s Spirit covers us, protecting us from harm and spiritual disease.
  • His Prosperity: “My cup overflows.” When we trust Jesus through the valleys, He blesses us abundantly.
