On Sunday, April 27, 2025, First Baptist Lafayette celebrated a once-in-a-generation milestone: the retirement of Brother Luther Burney after 58 years of faithful service to our church and 69 years in gospel ministry. The day was filled with heartfelt tributes, joyful memories, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for a man whose life has been wholly devoted to exalting Christ and serving His people.
A Lifetime of Ministry Rooted in the Gospel
Born in Alto, Louisiana, Brother Luther’s passion for music and ministry was evident from an early age. He was president of both his senior class and school choir before going on to earn a degree in Music Education from Northeast Louisiana State University and a graduate degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
His early ministry included churches in West Monroe, Shreveport, and Texas. But in 1967, God led him to First Baptist Lafayette, where he would spend nearly six decades leading and serving with unwavering commitment.
As Minister of Music and Administration, Brother Luther built a thriving music ministry with 16 active ensembles and over 600 participants ranging from preschoolers to senior adults. He spearheaded landmark productions like The Living Christmas Tree, The Lafayette Passion Play, and Symphony of Song, hosted at the Cajundome and the Heymann Performing Arts Center, often featuring nationally acclaimed guest artists. These events became cornerstones of our church’s ministry to the community and beyond.
Under his leadership, youth choirs traveled throughout the U.S. and abroad—ministering in Mexico, Canada, England, and Germany. The adult choir also toured China in the late 1980s, and Brother Luther was a charter member of the Centurymen, a group of 100 music ministers representing Southern Baptists internationally and through national broadcasts.
He retired from full-time ministry in 2005, but true to form, Brother Luther continued to serve. He was soon called back as Assistant to the Pastor, and since 2020, he has faithfully ministered to our senior adults—most recently through leading the Prime Time Singers, who performed last month at his home church in Swartz, Louisiana, and here in Lafayette.
Honored by Church, State, and University
During Sunday’s Legacy Service, our church family celebrated Brother Luther with deep affection and joy. The ceremony began with a powerful moment of recognition from the Louisiana House of Representatives, led by Representative Julie Emerson. A House Resolution (No. 58) was passed recognizing his retirement and lifelong service.
The service continued with a tribute from Dr. Mark Johnson, President of Louisiana Christian University, who announced the establishment of the Luther A. Burney Music and Ministry Scholarship. This endowed scholarship will bless future generations of ministry students in Brother Luther’s honor.
Words from a Faithful Servant
In his remarks to the congregation, Brother Luther reflected on his tenure at First Baptist Lafayette with humility, humor, and a deep love for the church. He credited the congregation and staff for their partnership through the years, challenging us to continue the mission by inviting others, supporting our pastors, and remaining faithful to the gospel.
He left us with this powerful charge:
“If you depend upon the pastor and staff to do it, it’s not going to happen. You are responsible for making this church what God wants it to be… The future is in front of us—let’s get behind our leaders and reach this community for Christ.”
A Grateful Church
Brother Luther closed the ceremony with a heartfelt prayer of thanksgiving—for the church, for the opportunity to serve, and for the future of God’s work in and through First Baptist Lafayette.
His legacy is more than years of service—it’s a life lived with integrity, joy, and an unwavering focus on Jesus. We give thanks to God for Brother Luther Burney, and we commit to carrying forward the work he so faithfully modeled: proclaiming the gospel and building up the Church—for the glory of God and the good of all people.
