A blog from Sunday’s sermon on Revelation 20:11-15.
What if God asked you, “Why should I let you into Heaven?”
It’s a question most people don’t like to think about, but it’s one we cannot avoid.
If you stood before God today and He asked, “Why should I let you into Heaven?” what would you say?
The Bible makes it clear: a day is coming when every single one of us will have to answer that question.
I. A Judgment to Face
Scripture describes a sobering scene often called the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20).
This is not symbolic. It is a future moment with real meaning.
- A great throne reminds us of God’s absolute sovereignty.
- A white throne reveals His perfect holiness.
- The fact that earth and heaven flee shows His overwhelming power.
- And the reality that nothing can hide displays His complete knowledge.
No one escapes this moment.
Everyone Will Be There
The Bible says all the dead, great and small, will be raised:
- Those lost at sea
- Those buried in the ground
- Those whose souls were in Hades
Every person, from every era, will stand before God.
Jesus Himself spoke about this resurrection (John 5:25–30). Revelation confirms it again (Revelation 20:4–6).
This is not optional. It is unavoidable.
The Books Will Be Opened
At this judgment, two things are revealed:
- The books of deeds — a record of everything we’ve done, thought, and intended
- The Book of Life — a record of those who belong to God
And here’s the reality: we will be judged based on what is written.
Hebrews 9:27 says, “It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.”
We plan for tests, doctor visits, and future milestones, but do we prepare for this?
Because one day, we will face it.
II. A Punishment to Fear
If we’re honest, this is where things get heavy.
The Bible says plainly:
“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
That means no one walks into judgment innocent.
The Second Death
Scripture describes a final punishment called the second death—the lake of fire:
- A place of judgment (Revelation 19:20)
- A place of eternal consequence (Revelation 20:10)
- A place where even death itself is defeated and removed (Revelation 20:14)
- A place for those not found in the Book of Life (Revelation 20:15)
Romans 6:23 puts it simply:
“The wages of sin is death…”
God is not forgetful. He is just.
And because He is just, He cannot ignore sin.
We might hope our wrongs are overlooked. We might assume they’ll fade with time.
But they won’t.
Everything is remembered. Everything is accounted for.
III. A Savior to Follow
This is where hope breaks through.
Yes, we are guilty. Yes, judgment is real. Yes, punishment is certain.
But there is also a way out.
The Book of Life
There is another book: the Lamb’s Book of Life.
And it contains the names of those who have been forgiven.
How?
Not by being “good enough.”
Not by trying harder.
Not by comparing ourselves to others.
But by trusting in Jesus.
Jesus Took Our Place
Romans 5:8 says:
“God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
We are the ones who rightly deserve death, but Jesus died in our place.
Romans 8:1 declares:
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
That means the verdict can change.
Not because the record disappears, but because it’s been paid for.
A Powerful Picture
There’s a story from the Civil War about a man named Wyatt who was drafted to fight. He had a large family depending on him, so another man, Pratt, volunteered to take his place.
Pratt went to war under Wyatt’s name and died in battle.
Later, when Wyatt was called up again, he made a remarkable claim:
“I’ve already died.”
When officials checked the records, they found it was true. Legally, Wyatt was counted as dead because his substitute had died in his place.
So he was set free.
That’s exactly what Jesus has done for us.
When He died, He died as our substitute.
So now, for those who belong to Him, their record reads:
“Paid in full.”
So What Will You Say?
One day, you will stand before God.
And in that moment, you won’t argue your goodness.
You won’t list your achievements.
You won’t compare yourself to others.
The only answer that matters is:
“Check the Book.”
Is your name written there?
Have you made the decision to follow Jesus? To believe Him and trust Him?
Because when you do, His death is applied to your account, and His life becomes your future.
“The free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
